Glittering past, exciting future

An internationally-recognised city of culture and a leading economic centre of the North West, Liverpool has a great deal to offer. And this is continuing to grow, as Liverpool Vision explain

Liverpool is one of the world’s great cities. In the last decade Liverpool has re-established itself as an international city of repute – a world class destination for all, whether businesses, students and tourists.

Excellence in heritage-led regeneration has secured Liverpool a place at the World Expo 2010, to be held in Shanghai, as the only UK city with a dedicated presence.

It’s a reflection both of Liverpool’s progress and its confidence. Liverpool is a city on the up, transformed into one of the UK’s leading business destinations by an ambitious and far-reaching £4bn investment programme and where business confidence and performance is at an all-time high.

The scale and pace of Liverpool’s economic renaissance has been impressive by any standards. The city’s role as a centre for financial and professional services, life sciences, creative, digital, knowledge and maritime-related services is driving rapid economic growth, faster than any other UK regional city.

Liverpool was built on trade and commerce and business is at the heart of the city and it is booming.

On the city’s magnificent waterfront its most famous buildings, The Three Graces, stand as symbols of Liverpool’s enduring commercial importance and of an international outward-looking city with a name that resonates across the globe. These great buildings still bustle with commercial activity, home to the likes of Princes Foods, Royal Liver Assurance, Grant Thornton, Deutsche Bank, Rathbones and Edward Billington.

The Liverpool waterfront has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and is both a monument to Liverpool’s glittering past and a statement of confidence in the city’s future.

The city’s future commercial growth lies in a new Commercial District. Liverpool’s business core is expanding into a new business address for the City. Here, stunning contemporary developments sit comfortably alongside refurbished post war buildings and historic listed buildings. Through the continuing modernisation of the building stock and alongside the completion of the St Paul’s Square development, Liverpool is establishing itself as a world class business destination and an environment in which business can flourish.

Over the last five years, more than 71,000 sqm of new Grade A office space has been successfully delivered in Liverpool’s Commercial District and more is planned. The final phase of St. Paul’s Square is well under construction and is currently due for completion in the summer of 2011.

The next phase of expansion will be Pall Mall, a four hectare natural extension to St Paul’s Square and capable of delivering up to 200,000 sqm of commercial-led mixed use development.

This boom in new build alongside quality refurbishment of existing space has been matched by record lettings activity. New and existing businesses, including Hill Dickinson, Rensburg Sheppards, Allied Irish Bank, HBOS, RBS, DWF, Halliwells and Maersk have established bases in this growth area in the city, making Liverpool their home.

And there is a great deal to draw them to the city. These businesses have been attracted by the results of large scale private and public investment in the infrastructure of the city, its attractive and affordable property options, its competitive cost base,
a skilled and loyal workforce, access to a large pool of graduates from the city’s world class universities, excellent public transport systems, strong links to a retail offer ranked in the top five in the UK, in a City of Culture which, for quality of life, is second to none.

The Liverpool Commercial District is a prestigious business location in a world famous city with its own character and ambience in which businesses thrive and their staff can live, work and enjoy life.

And Liverpool is a place full of life.

A dynamic business hub, the city is also home to several universities with a culture of research and development. And a growing student population brings a vibrancy to this exciting city that is alive both day and night.

Liverpool has something for everyone and attracts millions of visitors every year who flock to enjoy the city’s fantastic cultural and leisure opportunities.

The magnificent refurbished Albert Dock now stands alongside a string of new developments and quality attractions. Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool has provided the city with a spectacular state-of-the-art destination complex – providing the architectural centre piece of a major waterfront development, which includes new hotels, apartments, car parking and public performance space at a new urban quarter at Kings Dock.

The new Museum of Liverpool will exhibit the city’s unique contribution to the world and provides a powerful, confident symbol of Liverpool’s re-emergence as a pioneering world city. It is a wonderful addition to Liverpool’s existing eight museums and galleries – more than other city in the UK outside of London.

Liverpool’s two magnificent cathedrals, the Anglican Cathedral and Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King are linked by Hope Street in the heart of the Knowledge Quarter. This is one of the most distinctive, attractive and vibrant areas of its kind anywhere in the UK, notable for its concentration of performance venues, bars, restaurants, hotels and stunning Georgian architecture.
Hope Street is also home to the world-renowned Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra who provide one of the reasons for why Liverpool is synonymous with music. Of course, the city is also the birthplace of the most successful pop group in music history, The Beatles, as well as being the official World Capital of Pop.

Sport plays a big part in Liverpool. Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs have made it the most successful football city in England. It is home also to the Grand National, the most famous steeplechase in the world and the City Region has more than 40 golf courses including the Open Championship venues at Royal Birkdale and at Royal Liverpool, which will again host this most historic event in 2014.

For visitors and residents alike Liverpool offers a heady cultural and commercial mix unrivalled in the UK outside of London. Quite simply, Liverpool is one of Europe’s most dynamic and exciting cities offering significant value and a fabulous quality of life.
