London's Olympic aquatic centre is set to treble in cost
The showpiece of the aquatic events for London's 2012 Olympics is set to cost three times the initial estimate. It has been revealed that the building , already no stranger to controversy due to the audacious design of Zaha Hadid, is to be built by Balfour Beatty.
Balfour Beatty was the only contractor left in the bidding after the French firm Eiffel and German construction company Hochtief withdrew. The building is set to house 17,500 seats for spectators that will be removed once the Games are over, leaving a diving centre and swimming facility.
The cost of the centre is now estimated to be £242 million. Up from the original projection of £73 million.
