St.Helens means business

The North West is seeing a huge expansion in the provision of first class facilities for business. And with a variety of new developments, St.Helens is at the forefront of this, John Quirk explains

St.Helens is building a reputation as one of the North West’s leading business destinations, with commercial property developers keen to invest in this hotspot area.

In particular, Haydock and Lea Green, to the east and south of the borough, have been attracting
a great deal of interest.

Both Haydock, home of one of the UK’s most-visited racecourses and Lea Green offer companies space to expand with the advantage of excellent motorway links and local expertise in the distribution and logistics sector.

Mere Grange is a high quality new business park in St.Helens, built through a joint venture between developer Langtree and the Homes and Communities Agency.

The business park offers a fantastic location on the A570 St.Helens Linkway, close to Junction 7 of the M62, with excellent links to Liverpool and Manchester city centres via the comprehensive motorway network. Companies such as Lloyds Business Communications and Miller Construction UK Ltd. have already secured Mere Grange as their location of choice and view St.Helens as an attractive business base with relatively low costs, a catchment of 7m residents, clients and customers and a highly cost-effective, business-friendly environment.

Formerly known as Lea Green Farm West, Mere Grange has been reclaimed using funds from the former English Partnerships’ National Coalfields Programme and the EU and Merseyside Objective One programme. The 31 acre business park provides good quality and cost-effective commercial space for local companies to grow and to help attract new businesses to St.Helens. It has already succeeded in attracting new businesses to the town.

The £12m first phase, totalling over 54,000 sq ft, was completed in September 2008 and offers 10 two-storey buildings as either detached or semi-detached self-contained offices from 3,400 to 10,100 sq ft set in a mature landscaped environment.

Further development totalling 300,000 sq ft will be brought forward in phases on either a speculative or bespoke basis to further satisfy the market’s needs, ensuring that Mere Grange is set to become one of the North West’s premier business parks.

Stephen Barnes, Group Development Director of Langtree, said: “We are very pleased to have brought this important business park to our home town. The business park provides the space for service sector businesses to expand and attract new companies to invest in St.Helens.”

Frank Joyce, North West Area Director of Miller Construction, said: “The decision to relocate from Manchester to St.Helens was made easier by both Mere Grange’s excellent location, which allows access to the North West motorway links, the high quality of the offices and surrounding landscaping. Mere Grange quite simply ticks all the boxes for our business.”
