Embedding sustainability into development
The professionals at Atkins share their expertise with Estates Review on sustainability
The complex interactions between economic, social and environmental concerns which make up sustainable development require Atkins to apply a holistic and long term approach to assessments and solutions. The fast changing nature of the sustainability agenda requires anticipation and adequate responses. We consider that early integration of sustainability considerations into a policy, plan or project development process is key to ensure that sustainable outcomes are achieved. Atkins are at the forefront of the changing sustainability agenda and are well placed to offer advice on implementing sustainable development solutions.
At plan level we have been successfully working with Local Authorities and developers to deliver Sustainability Appraisal (SA)/ Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of their plans.
Atkins also offers a wide range of sustainability services to implement sustainable solutions in new development. Sustainability Statements are increasingly required by Local Planning Authorities to support planning applications and Atkins can advise on the planning, design and implementation of solutions such as sustainability frameworks for new development, BREEAM, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, energy efficiency, renewable energy solutions and embedding sustainable design measures into new development amongst other services.
At the plan level, for example, Atkins have been working with the Thames Gateway Development Corporation to assess and improve the sustainability performance of the Grays Town Centre and Purfleet Masterplans.
At the project level, for example, Atkins have prepared a Sustainability Statement to accompany the planning application for Osprey Quay, the Olympic sailing venue. Atkins have also completed a major, environmentally sustainable refurbishment of the headquarters of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) – the government department which is itself responsible for sustainable development in the UK. DEFRA’s flagship nine storey Nobel House in Westminster has been awarded a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’. The final score of 79.7 percent is the highest ever attained in UK for either a new build or refurbished office premise.
